The Chloe Callender Awards honour a life time of contribution and achievement. An educator, community and development worker, and leadership trainer, Ms. Callender has promoted positive Ethnocultural relations, through networks of friendship and social action. She was the first regional President of the Congress of Black Women and its Ontario President for two terms. Co founder K-W Caribbean – Canadian Cultural Association (now CCAWR) The recipient of many prestigious national, provincial, and regional awards, Ms. Callender continues to serve on various boards in Waterloo Region.

About …The Congress of Black Women of Canada – Waterloo Chapter

The Chapter was formed in August 1988 at the home of Veronica Norris –Lue.  Twelve women formed the chapter; the first local President was Chloë Callender.

Mission – through programs of education and service, seeks to motivate Black women and their families to participate in and contribute to the life of the communities in which they live.

Membership – open to all Black women over 16 years of age. There is an annual membership fee of $30.00.  Monthly meetings are held from September to June.

Events

  • The  Ladies’ Tea – an annual event held in June at the Green Gables Guest House in Kitchener.
  • The  Annual Awards of Excellence Brunch in conjunction with the CCAWR.  Several scholarships are awarded to Black students who are pursuing Post Secondary education in Canada.
  • Other  events include participation in the Multicultural Festival, the Link Picnic, Afro Fest and Black History Month Celebrations.

Partnerships the chapter partners with several local community organizations which have similar mandates:

  • Focus for Ethnic Women
  • The School Sisters of Notre Dame
  • The Caribbean Canadian Association of Waterloo Region (CCAWR)
  • The African Women’s Alliance of Waterloo Region
  • The Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre
  • The African Canadian Association of Waterloo Region
  • The Coalition for the Success of African-Caribbean Canadian Youth
